Ciccarelli had an excellent career despite being undrafted, notably with the Minnesota North Stars and the Detroit Red Wings, where he had his third-highest scoring season. He amassed 1,200 points in his NHL career and is regarded as one of the top players in NHL history who did not win the Stanley Cup. Ciccarelli reached the Stanley Cup Final with both the North Stars and the Red Wings during his debut season.
Ciccarelli faced numerous challenges on his journey to the NHL, such as suffering a fractured leg at the age of 16 and being considered too small to compete in the league. He did, however, sign as a free agent with the Minnesota North Stars in September 1979 and made his debut during the 1980-81 season. He has the most goals and points scored by a rookie in NHL history.
